DNA Project - Interpreting the DNA Markers

Updated: July 4, 2006

We are currently testing at the 12 marker test to first determine a relationship. Once a relationship is established by either matching all 12, or missing by 1 marker, then we are going to see how many people are interested in upgrading to the 25 marker test.

As you will begin to see, by reviewing the chart below, the next level will more clearly define how far back (by years) the common ancestor would be. My brother, James Hurt #39788, tested first at the 12 marker and now has upgraded to the 25 marker. We were able to get a group discount of $49.00 for the upgrade.

A generation is counted as 25 years.

I am still looking for more "Hurts" to test. If you need more information, contact me at sandynorris@hurtgenealogy.org.

An Example:
My brother matched 11 of 12 of the markers with the other participants, which the table says there is a 50 percent probability that the Most Recent Common Ancestor (MRCA) was no longer than 17 generations.
The formula would be:
17 generations X 25 years per generation = 425 years.

For a 12 of 12 match, the formula would be:
7 generations X 25 years per generation = 175 years back to the MRCA.

Follow the table across and do the math.
